The future of humanity is among the stars

PSB recently installed a really cool Traxis DBS-3500 in my house for use with SpaceVidcast.com.  I was going to have a Slingbox Solo hooked to it so I could control it from my computer at home or at work, but it seems that there are no Traxis IR commands in the Slingmedia database.

Does anyone know if the Traxis box emulates IR commands from another device, or if there is a way to get it to work?  I found this:  http://www.slingcommunity.com/article/10580 but that seems a bit deeper than I was thinking I would need to go.

Thoughts?

I don't know the IR code of your Traxis.

But I can tell you my way of zapping with the slingbox and a different satellite receiver...

I'm using serveral Dreamboxes with web interfaces (each box has its own web interface). That's an interactive tool for channel switching, EPG searching, timer settings, live tv - needs a minimum of 4 MBit upload speed for SDTV- , setup of network drives and much more).

But the most important of all is the channel window ... here you can select all your channels and favorites ... and you can start your recorded videos (and even download your videos direct from your box!)

Here's a snapshot in a very low quality (damn low attachment file size!) ... just click the right mousebutton on the thumbnail and select "open in a new tab/window" or something like that).

Doesn't the standard up/down work for channel switching? That's basicly all you need right.

And Michael, the dreambox web-interface is totally besides the point. The slingbox is way better because it actually compresses the video/audio as you know, so that it is watchable over most internet connections. Who does mpeg2 streaming anymore. If you have a channel which uses 8 mbit video then you would need to have a 8-9 mbit upload. Not many people have such a connection (yet)

Ben has conected a receiver to his slingbox ... it's not conected to his cable network! You should learn to read!

btw ... you don't need 8 mbit for channel switching Roll Eyes

So I am still stuck here.  Without an IR command I can't switch channels (an up/down command would require an IR send command which requires that code).

I could try purchasing a Dreambox but I have a couple of concerns:
1 - I have a slingbox because we need to be able to search for space related video (shots of the shuttle on the pad, ISS live shots, etc., etc) and to do that I WILL need video streaming.  I have a 50Mbps down, 5Mbps up connection but 1Mbps of the upload is in use by the live SpaceVidcast.com stream.  If I'm streaming 4Mbps and it starts to eat away at the live stream, I'm in trouble

2 - The broadcasts for space related news will pop on and off which means I need a good and fast way to blind scan for appropriate material and a quick way to determine if I can legally use it (that part is actually easy).

3 - The entire videocast is coming out of my pocket, so I'm trying to keep costs as low as possible.  The dreambox doesn't look like it will be very inexpensive!

So unless I'm missing something, I'm back at square one.

just connect the Dreambox to your slingbox ... that's all. You don't need to stream the whole TS-stream of your Dreambox. That video stream of the Dreambox is tu use on your LAN or if you have a higher upload rate. If not, then let your slingbox do the job.

btw ... every Dreambox is able to show NTSC channels in NTSC video. You just have to select "NTSC" in your Dreambox's video settings menu.

for your other 2 questions...

unfortunately, no Dreambox has blind scan Sad

but you don't need a very expensive Dreambox. There are cheaper ones on the market (i.e. DM500 - but please don't buy a chinese version!!! These boxes wont work with newer firmwares!!!) ... I'm using a DM7020 with PVR functions, a DM600 with PVR and a DM500 just for cable reception w/o PVR.

Alas, blind scan is sorta a requirement... The sad thing is that it would work if I could just get the IR to operate!

why you don't try all the other receiver's codes of your slingbox? Maybe there's a receiver with the same codes.

Michael, What's wrong with you?  Huh

I know your english isn't great but  you are the one who keeps reading messages badly and posting stupid comments. Eventhough you probably want to help you really don't get it. Take an English course!!!

- Where did i mention a receiver connected to cable network ?
- When did the topicstarter ask for you to talk about "the dreambox" ?
- Also the webinterface of the dreambox puts the video/audio stream on the network as it is broadcasted!!!! So stop writing this nonsense.

There is no need to buy another receiver. He just needs to get the IR codes working on the slingbox.  Besides the traxis is probably just a simple FTA blindscan receiver without a network interface. So suggesting anything simular to the dreambox webinterface is not possible.

My English is good enough for understanding and for my replies.

- Where did i mention a receiver connected to cable network ?

here...

Doesn't the standard up/down work for channel switching? That's basicly all you need right.

You need a direct cable connection when you want to click "channel up and down". But he's using a receiver at his slingbox. He can't just click "up" or "down" ... his slingbox needs an IR code to change the channels.

- When did the topicstarter ask for you to talk about "the dreambox" ?

And another stupid question. He never ask me about the Dreambox. I just gave him a tip to use this box.

- Also the webinterface of the dreambox puts the video/audio stream on the network as it is broadcasted!!!! So stop writing this nonsense.
I gave him that tip because you can change the channel by using the web interface. That does not mean that he has to use the stream of the box.

There is no need to buy another receiver. He just needs to get the IR codes working on the slingbox.  Besides the traxis is probably just a simple FTA blindscan receiver without a network interface. So suggesting anything simular to the dreambox webinterface is not possible.

I already wrote that, stupid!

And again: Learn to read, stupid!

btw ... My English isn't the best. We all know that. But I'll try to give good answers. You're writing a bunch of crap all the time! Better you leave the board ... or I'll leave it.

I have created the proper files to get this to work.  A couple buttons didn't map like I want, but the functions all seem to be there one way or another.  I'll work on figuring out the buttons later.  Here's how to do it:

1 - Download the file at http://www.spacevidcast.com/fta/S0100.zip
2 - Unzip the file and place the contents of the zipped file in your C:\Program Files\Sling Media\SlingPlayer\SBAV folder
3 - Open your Sling Player software
4 - Go to the 'Slingbox' menu then 'Properties' then select the 'Slingbox Configuration' tab
5 - Click the 'Change' button under Audio/Video Setup
6 - Select 'Next' until you get to the Television Source screen
7 - Select 'Satellite or Free-To-Air receiver' then click 'Next'
8 - Under Device Brand select 'Other' then click 'Next'
9 - Under the Control Code Setup screen go to the Alternate Code field and enter 'S0100' without the quotes.
10 - Give the system a moment to read the IR commands and the press the 'Power' button to ensure it is working correctly.  If it is working your device will power on/off
11 - Press 'Next' and 'Finish' until you're out of the Interface.

Now when you launch your slingbox it will show the remote.  The menu command only seems to work if you go to the remote dropdown screen.  I have not yet figured out how to actually map it to the 'Menu' button on the remote.  Otherwise it looks like most everything else works correctly.

I hope this helps others too!  By the way, you have to set this all up on a Windows box, but once you have it working the software will have a working remote for any platform you sling from.  Cool!

UPDATE: I have updated the files linked above to better map to the Slingbox virtual remote control.  The menu button now works and almost all of the functions are there.  I'm missing a button for 'Display/Info' and the 'M/P' button is mapped to the stop key (hey, had to put it somewhere).  If you have an issue with the layout, just let me know and I can probably change it.
